You tried to stop the recycle bin from being emptied but it was already too late. Gone are the hundreds of man-hours you spent in that particular file. Well, you could put off banging your head on the wall because you can still recover the files you accidentally deleted even though the recycle bin has already been emptied. Thanks to a wonderful and tiny application called System Restore.
System Restore epitomizes the slogan that small can sometimes be really powerful. It is an integral part of the Windows series of operating systems and is powerful in a sense that it helps you restore your computer, its files and application software, registry keys, and all other vital elements to its original state. In fact, it can even recover files which have been dumped into oblivion by the recycle bin.

This powerful application works by marking dates and times on your computer then creating restore points on them so that if you want to restore your PC at a particular date, you can do so by simply clicking on the marked date on the System Restore window. These restore points contain all the information about your computer, its files and application, and registry keys on that particular date right before it was changed. In effect, it allows you to return the computer to that specific date before you implemented any changes.
System Restore monitors the changes on each drive volume and records everything down before it is discarded at a much later date. Unless you manually changed the setting, the default status of System Restore on every computer running Windows Me, XP, Vista or 7 is always on monitoring mode. If there are certain volumes on your computer which is not being monitored by the restore, the files on that particular volume may never be restored.
It is therefore important to have System Restore monitor all the volumes of your hard drive because it will come in real handy if ever the need arises. The only downside about this powerful application is that it consumes huge amounts of disk space, sometimes gobbling up several gigabytes from your hard drive. This is however a miniscule issue compared to the big help System Restore can give you when the time comes for you to use it.
